Hell on Loznica’s Dump: Fire Devours Three Hectares and Smoke Chokes the City!
Yesterday turned into a nightmare in Loznica! A fire suddenly broke out around noon at the city dump, engulfing about three hectares of waste. Yes, you read that right – three hectares! The battle with the fiery beast lasted all night as firefighters tirelessly worked to prevent the fire from spreading to city buildings.
Thick Smoke That Chokes and Suffocates
The biggest problem wasn’t just the fire, but the thick, toxic smoke spreading and threatening residents’ health. Firefighters fought the blaze on two fronts – machines buried the fire with earth, while firefighters doused it with water. But the wind kept fanning the flames, and access was hindered by canals on both sides of the dump.
Despite all obstacles, 31 firefighters from Loznica, Mali Zvornik, Krupanj, and Šabac, along with heavy machinery, managed to bring the fire under control overnight. But the danger wasn’t over – the smoke continued to choke the surroundings, and residents were urged to keep windows closed and stay indoors.
State of Emergency and Urgent Measures
On Saturday evening, an emergency city headquarters meeting was held, declaring a state of emergency in the local community 4. jul, where the dump is located. Mayor Dragana Lukić was on site, monitoring the situation and coordinating firefighting efforts.
All relevant sectors were engaged, and additional air quality measurements were announced. Although the automatic measuring station showed good air quality, PM10 particulate concentrations were below 11 mg/m3, well under the daily limit of 50 mg/m3, residents still need to be cautious.
What’s the Problem and Why Is This Happening?
The city dump in Loznica is located next to the river Štira, near the large settlement Lozničko Polje and the industrial zone Šepak. This location is problematic because it is surrounded by canals that prevent heavy machinery access, and the wind further fans the fire.
Is this just an accident or a sign of poor waste management and inadequate environmental protection? While firefighters give their all, residents wonder – how many more disasters like this can we endure?
What’s Next?
Firefighting teams will remain on site until the fire is completely extinguished. The city appeals for patience and following official updates. And us? We can only wonder – when will someone finally take responsibility and prevent such incidents from happening again?
If you have a good tip on dealing with smoke or fire, or just want to share how hard it is to breathe in these conditions – feel free to drop a comment. Let the people’s voice be heard, because it seems the authorities aren’t listening loud enough!
