Jurgen Klopp, the legendary Liverpool manager, is not holding back on the Club World Cup. He calls it “the worst idea ever implemented in football” and warns that this schedule is destroying players. While some clubs rake in “insane amounts of money,” most players suffer from the packed calendar. Last year we had Copa America and the European Championship, this year the Club World Cup, and next year the World Cup. Where is the rest for the players? Klopp insists that tournaments like this should not be held at the expense of players’ health and form. “I wouldn’t wish anyone to get injured because of this,” he says. Players are on the brink of burnout, and injuries threaten to ruin the next season. Footballers are humans, not machines! We must give them a break, or football will become a game without players.
