Vidovdan in Belgrade: Student Protests or Police Chaos?
Tonight, Belgrade witnessed one of the most intense student protests in recent memory. At Slavija Square, students called on citizens to send them “all footage of police and thug violence” and declared they now have the “green light” to take freedom into their own hands. Is this a call for peaceful struggle or chaos?
Police and gendarmerie forces intervened strongly at multiple locations in the city center, escalating tensions even further. The students made it clear they will continue the fight for their demands on their own, but now citizens have the chance to join in.
The legendary basketball player and EuroLeague president Dejan Bodiroga spoke at the protest, urging unity and stating that patriotism today lies with the youth, not those who label students as terrorists. Bodiroga sharply condemned the authorities and praised the courage of young people fighting for justice and freedom.
The university rector also expressed confidence that the students will “play the end of a dark era” and that their nonviolent struggle will bring deep changes.
