Chaos on Montenegrin Roads: Why Are Traffic Jams and Closures the New Normal?

Today in Montenegro, traffic chaos is at an all-time high, making you wish you had just stayed home! The Auto-Moto Association of Montenegro (AMSCG) warns of increased vehicle frequency, meaning traffic jams everywhere. Planning a long trip? Better hit the road early morning or late afternoon, or prepare to stew in traffic.

Where is the chaos?

On the regional road Đurđevića Tara – Mojkovac, specifically at Sokolovina, traffic is completely stopped due to rockfalls. This is a critical point currently under repair, so no passage is possible. On road R16 Plužine – Virak, traffic is closed in three intervals during the day for road resurfacing. Similar closures happen on regional road R29 Bar – Kamenički most – Krute.

On main roads M2, M3, and M6, traffic flows one lane alternately, with some sections switching from two-way to one-way due to works and landslide repairs. In Podgorica, traffic on Vojsavljevića street is closed due to boulevard construction, forcing vehicles to take alternative routes.

Why is this a problem?

These closures and works are necessary, but combined with increased traffic, they create a perfect recipe for gridlock. People lose hours stuck in lines, get frustrated, and the economy suffers as goods and services slow down. Not to mention the danger for emergency services that might be delayed.

Is there a solution?

AMSCG advises drivers to plan trips carefully, take frequent breaks, and use alternative routes where possible. But is that enough? Bigger investments in traffic infrastructure and better work organization are needed. Without that, these situations will become our daily reality.

Conclusion

Montenegrin roads are undergoing major changes and reconstruction, but that doesn’t mean we should silently endure chaos and jams. If you’re stuck in traffic today, you’re not alone — this is just the tip of the iceberg of Montenegro’s traffic problems. Maybe it’s time to ask: how much more of this madness can we take?
