Vučić Accuses Belgrade University Rector of Terrorism: Academic Drama or Political Soap Opera?

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić did not hold back when he accused Belgrade University Rector Vladan Đokić of terrorism at a press conference on June 29. Yes, you read that right — terrorism! All this over dissatisfaction with university enrollment quotas and student protests shaking Serbia.

What Happened?

Đokić was one of the speakers at a massive student protest at Slavija Square, where students blocked faculties due to numerous issues, including the death of 16 people in a canopy collapse at the Novi Sad railway station. In mid-April, Đokić was called for an informational police interview on suspicion of abuse of office, but he insists he committed no crime.

SNS and Government in Shock

Vučić made it clear that no member of the Serbian Progressive Party will negotiate with “terrorists” and those “destroying the state.” Apparently, Đokić has become the number one enemy of the authorities. The government even disbanded the working group drafting the higher education law, and regarding enrollment quotas, there is only a verbal agreement with no official documents.

Academic Community in Chaos

Besides Đokić, other professors are under investigation for supporting student blockades. The “Rebel University” initiative blocked the intersection in front of the Serbian government for 17 days, demanding the disbandment of the working group and the repeal of a controversial regulation on university work standards.

Vučić Expects Incidents

The president warned of possible incidents and violence at protests, further fueling tension and division in society.

Conclusion

Is the rector really a terrorist, or is this just another political show? While the academic community fights for its rights, the government uses harsh words and measures. Serbia is on the edge of an academic and political earthquake.
