Milicevic and the Diaspora: Unity as Salvation, But Where’s the Action?

Ah, the diaspora! That magical word that always lights a fire in the hearts of politicians in Serbia. Đorđe Milićević, the minister responsible for diaspora relations, is back on stage with his eternal mantra about “unity that saves.” At a two-day gathering of the Serbian diaspora in Zlatibor, Milićević repeated what we’ve heard a thousand times: “Our strength lies in unity, gathering, and togetherness.” Bravo! But where are the concrete results? Where are the plans that will truly help Serbs in the diaspora feel connected and supported?

The minister emphasized that every country must have an umbrella organization that brings together diaspora associations, and that exchanging opinions and reaching agreements is necessary. Sounds nice, but how many times have we heard these words? And how many times have they remained just on paper?

Let’s recall, on the first day of the Vidovdan Assembly of the diaspora, the “Expo 2027” project was presented. Another brilliant idea promising a lot, but will it ever be realized? While politicians play with words, ordinary people in the diaspora still struggle with bureaucracy, lack of support, and a feeling of being forgotten.

And what about the real problems? How to help young people return or stay connected to their country? How to ease business, education, culture? Milićević and team, it’s time to stop with empty phrases and start acting!

If you’re tired of political clichés and want to hear something concrete, drop a comment below. Or just say — how bored are you of hearing “only unity saves the Serb” while nothing changes. Let’s have a little laugh at ourselves, because what else is left?
