Student Protests in Belgrade: Police vs Blockaders and Vučić’s Victory

Belgrade is on fire with student protests that peaked on June 29, when students blocked faculties and caused chaos on the streets. The police responded harshly, pushing the last protesters off Slavija Square, while some demonstrators threw stones, bottles, and flares at the riot police. Streets like Kralja Milana and Kneza Miloša were battlegrounds, and two men were arrested. Traffic was partially blocked, especially on Branko’s Bridge, while Gazela Bridge operated normally.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić didn’t miss his chance to jump into the story. He visited Pioneer Park and declared that “students won, blockaders lost.” He pointed out that the number of blockaders is now three times less than on March 15, and that students are confident in their fight, justice, and ideals. Vučić thanked citizens for their huge support and expressed pride in the youth, emphasizing that faculties will soon return to normal due to exams.

This situation shines a light on deep divisions in society. On one side, students demanding change and expressing dissatisfaction; on the other, the state using police force to restore order. The clashes on Belgrade’s streets are not just a fight for faculties but a fight for Serbia’s future. Is this the end of student protests or just the beginning of a new phase?
