Vidovdan as a Symbol of Unity and Investment: Serbia and Diaspora in Action!
Vidovdan, that mythical day for Serbs, is not just a historical reminder but an opportunity for Serbia and its diaspora to come together and fight for a better future. On Zlatibor, the event “Unity of Serbia’s Forces” was ceremoniously opened on the occasion of Vidovdan and the Day of the Serbian Diaspora in the region, with Đorđe Milićević, the minister responsible for diaspora affairs, expressing pride and optimism.
“Vidovdan is the day when we remember our roots and history, but also look to a future built on unity and solidarity,” Milićević said. Not only that, he emphasized that today there is a much better relationship with the diaspora than before, Serbia is economically strong and internationally recognized, and a visible process of return from diaspora is underway.
At the event, local governments presented their investment potentials, and Đorđe Andrić from the Serbian Chamber of Commerce highlighted that last year was a record year for remittances from the diaspora — a whopping 5 billion euros! However, he wants that money not just to be spent on consumption but directed towards investments and creating new jobs.
Panel discussions focused on concrete strategies to increase cooperation between the diaspora and local communities, as well as preserving Serbian identity through language, culture, and tradition, especially among the youth both in the homeland and abroad.
Also presented was the “Expo 2027” project, aiming to showcase Serbia to the world as a center of business and culture for the Serbian diaspora. Igor Kovačević from the international cooperation sector noted that Belgrade recently hosted delegations from almost all countries worldwide, all supporting Serbia’s candidacy for this event.
All in all, Vidovdan this year is not just a day of remembrance but a day of action, plans, and concrete steps towards strengthening Serbia through unity with the diaspora. If you think this is just another political story, think again — 5 billion euros in remittances is no small matter, and the idea of turning that money into investments and jobs sounds like a dream that might finally come true.
So, what do you think — will Serbia finally harness the power of its diaspora, or will it all remain empty promises? Drop a comment, let’s see who’s optimistic and who’s skeptical!
