Toma Zdravković: The Bohemian Who Turned Gambling and Alcohol into a Life Tragedy
Born into a poor family in Aleksinac, Toma Zdravković had nothing but a soul full of feelings. Growing up in the village of Pečenjevci near Leskovac, he found refuge in taverns and music. His songs were not just lyrics but autobiographical confessions filled with pain, unrequited love, and the spirit of the kafana.
Silvana Armenulić, a big star, recognized his talent and opened the doors to the music world for him. Yet, Toma was no ordinary star – he didn’t wear fancy suits or drive limousines; he often walked on foot. He was vulnerable, tender, and a bohemian, but also a prisoner of his vices – alcohol and gambling.
Though he didn’t love alcohol, he fled into it and gambling as an escape from reality. One night, he won about 80 marks (around 40 euros) but lost it all. His life was full of ups and downs – he moved to America and Canada, where in Toronto he married for the fourth time and had a son named Aleksandar.
Upon returning to Serbia, he won back the audience. The Dom Sindikata in Belgrade was packed for 20 consecutive nights, with people coming to hear not just a singer but a man who lived through everything he sang about.
Sadly, his health was deteriorating, and he died poor and quietly on September 30, 1991. He left no fortune but something far more valuable – songs, lyrics, and a voice that won’t be forgotten.
His story is a warning about the price of fame, vices, and a life full of pain. If you think the life of celebrities is easy, think again. Toma proves that behind the shine often lies darkness.
