Marker Magic: Filip Savković’s Experimental Voyage Through Time and Shipbuilding

If you thought markers were just for boring school doodles, think again! Filip Savković’s exhibition “Shipbuilders” at the Kornjača Gallery in Belgrade is sailing into uncharted waters with nine drawings of sailing ships and galleys that don’t just float on paper—they sail through time and imagination in a dynamic, almost magical world. At just 24, this academic painter doesn’t just draw ships; he invents fictional shipbuilders inspired by ancient masters from Egypt and classical Greece. These vessels aren’t mere wooden structures; they’re symbols of hope, safety, and childhood memories that take us back to when people built their dreams on the waves.

This exhibition is a true artistic experiment—using simple markers but packing deep symbolism and layers of meaning. Savković underwent rigorous academic training to free his lines and create compositions that seem to hover between reality and fiction. His ships sail toward an imagined spiritual city, and one piece, inspired by Buddhism, is titled “Maitreya”—the teacher of the present time, building an immaterial spiritual ship.

This isn’t just an art show; it’s a call to reflect on impermanence, time, and the power of art to connect us with past and future. If you’re in Belgrade before July 10, drop by Kornjača Gallery and embark on this unusual journey through time and imagination. And if these ships look like mere scribbles on paper, remember—sometimes simplicity carries the deepest message. So, who’s ready to set sail? Drop your favorite imaginary ships in the comments or just take a look and tell us—would you dare to navigate these fantastical seas?
