Belgrade Blockades: Street Chaos or a Civil War in the Making?

Belgrade is on fire again, but not because of a festival or celebration. The city center has turned into a battlefield thanks to relentless blockades. Today, protesters harassed citizens by blocking pedestrian crossings in Zemun, then moved to Zeleni Venac and the Terazije tunnel. The gendarmerie had to step in and forcefully move them, but the chaos didn’t stop — blockades continued near the Youth Center, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and Sarajevo Street. All this because their colleagues were arrested, suspected of planning a violent change of the constitutional order.

But wait, there’s more! The previous night’s blockades were even fiercer — bridges in Belgrade and other cities were blocked with containers and fences. Police removed the barricades overnight, but how long will traffic stay normal?

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić didn’t stay silent. He clearly stated that street violence cannot be tolerated and that these blockades are attempts to provoke a civil war. Dr. Aleksandra Tomić from the ruling SNS party explained that the state has limited options until someone breaks the law, but the police and prosecutors are doing their job. She emphasized that the blockade participants are far from ordinary students — they are called terrorists aiming to destabilize the state.

Opposition parties tried to compare the situation to Hong Kong and color revolutions, but the government claims victory and promises that the violent actors will be held accountable.

As Belgrade struggles with blockades, citizens are trapped in their own city, traffic is in chaos, and tensions are rising. Is this the start of something much bigger? Will the violence continue, or will the state regain control? One thing is clear — Belgrade’s streets haven’t been this heated in a long time.
