Tragedy near Čazma: Woman Dies from Dog Pack Attack – Who’s to Blame and Why No One Acts?

A horrifying tragedy near Čazma has shocked Croatia! Sixty-six-year-old Marija Buković was brutally attacked and severely injured by a pack of dogs while out for a walk. Four dogs, owned by her neighbors, attacked her on March 17, inflicting serious wounds to her face, arms, legs, and abdomen. Her family is in shock, and the tragedy culminated when Marija died in the hospital from a stroke suspected to be linked to the attack.

Her brother Nikola, who found her, was in disbelief — the injuries were so severe he didn’t think she would survive. The dog owner, however, showed no remorse, ignoring the tragedy as if nothing happened. The family claims this could have been prevented as the dogs had previously roamed the streets and attacked people, and the owner did not have a proper enclosure for them.

The state prosecutor’s office in Bjelovar has responded and is conducting an investigation, including an autopsy of the victim’s body. The dog owner was released from custody but charged with a crime against public safety. The dogs were taken to an animal shelter.

This tragedy raises serious questions about the responsibility of dog owners and the authorities who failed to act on earlier reports. How could such a disaster happen in a quiet village? Will justice be served, or will this become yet another story of negligence and irresponsibility?
