Denmark has officially taken over the presidency of the European Union for the next six months, promising to focus on strengthening Europe’s security and competitiveness, as well as promoting EU enlargement based on the merits of candidate countries. Under the slogan “A Strong Europe in a Changing World,” the Danish presidency plans to focus on internal EU reforms, enhancing resilience against external threats, and advancing enlargement negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova, and Western Balkan countries. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that Europe is at a decisive moment and that freedom and prosperity can no longer be taken for granted. But will these promises be fulfilled or are they just another set of empty EU phrases? The Danish presidency also plans to simplify EU legislation and strengthen ties with Western European countries that are not EU members, as well as focus on the green transition as a key to a more competitive and secure Europe. The official handover ceremony took place on July 3 in Aarhus, attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU commissioners. At the end of the year, the presidency will be handed over to Cyprus. As Europe faces new international challenges, it remains to be seen whether the Danish presidency will bring real change or remain just words.
