Bojan Bogdanović, one of the BEST Croatian basketball players of the 21st century, has decided to put an end to his brilliant career. At just 36 years old, after more than two decades on the court, Bogdanović announced his retirement with a heartfelt farewell letter that moved many basketball fans.
The Battle with Injury and a Tough Decision
After 14 grueling months battling a foot injury, undergoing two surgeries, and countless attempts to return to the court, Bogdanović finally said “enough.” The decision to retire was not easy, but sometimes life doesn’t choose the moment — it chooses you.
From Mostar to the NBA
It all started in his hometown of Mostar, where he took his first basketball steps with Zrinjski. His journey took him through Real Madrid, Murcia, Cibona, Fenerbahçe — clubs that left a deep mark on European and NBA basketball. In the NBA, he wore the jerseys of the Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, Indiana Pacers, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, and New York Knicks.
Croatian National Team – Pride and Emotion
For Bogdanović, playing for Croatia was not just a duty but an honor and identity. From junior levels to the senior national team, he was a pillar and top scorer. At EuroBasket 2017 in Slovenia, he was named to the All-Tournament Team, and at the 2016 Rio Olympics, he was the top scorer with an average of 24.8 points per game.
Records and Recognition
In the 2022/23 season with Detroit, he became the highest-scoring Croatian in NBA history, surpassing the legendary Toni Kukoč. His career was filled with ups and downs but left an indelible mark in the hearts of fans.
