Municipalities Demand Control Over Montenegro’s Natural Resources: Kovačević Threatens Decentralization or Chaos!

Municipalities or the State? Kovačević and Crew Launch War Over Montenegro’s Natural Resources!

Ready for the next political drama in Montenegro? The mayor of Nikšić, Marko Kovačević, is not backing down! He’s raising his voice, declaring that municipalities like Nikšić, Pljevlja, Plužine, Rožaje, and others won’t stay silent while the state holds tight control over natural and economic resources.

Decentralize or Bust!

Kovačević plans to kick off talks with fellow municipal leaders to take a united stand on resource management. He believes it’s high time to dismantle state-owned companies currently running mines, hydro and thermal power plants, forests, and other treasures.

“If coastal municipalities can take over managing Montenegro’s coastline, why can’t we manage our mines and forests?” he asks. He stresses decentralization can’t be selective — it’s all or nothing!

Who’s Running Montenegro’s Wealth?

Coastal municipalities have already started taking control of the coastline by abolishing the state company Morsko Dobro. Kovačević wants the same model applied to inland municipalities that hold huge national resources.

He’s calling for the abolition of state companies like Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG), Plantaže, Golubovci Airport, and even Skadar Lake National Park. All so municipalities can have direct control and benefit from their own resources.

Citizens Win or Chaos?

According to Kovačević, EU-standard decentralization would bring direct benefits to citizens. Local communities would gain more from the wealth on their land.

But is this really a new dawn or a recipe for chaos? What if municipalities can’t agree? What if the state refuses to give up control?

What Do Others Say?

Kovačević is clear — decentralization can’t be half-baked. If one group of municipalities has the right to manage, all must have the same right. Otherwise, it’s privilege, not decentralization.

This is a wake-up call for anyone who thinks the state can hold all the strings. Municipalities own their resources and demand respect.

Conclusion

Montenegro stands at a crossroads. Will the state keep control over natural wealth, or will municipalities take the reins? Kovačević and his allies aren’t giving up and promise talks that could change everything.

If you think this is just another political story, think again. This fight over resources could change thousands of lives. What about you? Team decentralization or state monopoly? Drop a comment and let’s see where everyone stands!
