Vidovdan Chaos: Serbian Politics Stuck in a Deadlock with No Way Out

Vidovdan has passed, but Serbian politics is still in total chaos! Three days after Vidovdan, instead of calming down, the streets are blocked, mental paralysis is complete. Politics is stuck in time, with nationalism split into “good” and “bad,” but really it’s just a smokescreen for Vučić’s monopoly. Memories of the seventies and attempts to reform from within now seem like a bad joke, as many of those reformers ended up in the hands of various nationalist leaders. Democratization? Media freedom? The reality is that we’ll probably only be saved by a “strong hand” — or we’ll keep drifting in this river of madness and nonsense for a long time. All sides in the conflict only help each other delay the crisis, and the people are disoriented and bewildered. Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophy might best describe the situation: it’s not true that nothing is certain, but if your arm is amputated, another won’t grow. The same goes for democracy in Serbia — all that’s left is hope that this “democratic hand” will someday grow, even though we never had it. Got thoughts? Jump into the conversation — maybe together we’ll find a way out of this mess!
