EU Extends Sanctions on Russia: Hungary and Slovakia Drag Feet, Gas and Oil at Stake

EU Extends Sanctions on Russia: Hungary and Slovakia Drag Feet, Gas and Oil at Stake!

The European Union has officially extended its sectoral sanctions against Russia for an additional six months, until January 31 next year. This decision came after EU leaders agreed at last week’s summit, but it’s not all smooth sailing.

Sanctions That Hit Hard

EU sanctions against Russia were first introduced in February 2022 in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. So far, 17 sanction packages have been adopted, covering a wide range of sectors: trade, finance, energy, technology, transport, luxury goods, and more. These include bans on importing crude oil and certain oil products from Russia, as well as excluding several Russian banks from the SWIFT system.

Hungary and Slovakia: The Energy Roadblocks

However, it’s not that simple. Hungary and Slovakia are resisting parts of the new, 18th sanction package. These two countries are demanding permission to continue buying Russian gas and oil, which is the main sticking point. Hungary even threatened to delay the decision until the last day, potentially jeopardizing EU unity on this issue.

EU’s Ambitious Goal to End Dependence on Russian Fossil Fuels

The European Commission recently proposed that the EU completely end its dependence on Russian fossil fuels by the end of 2027. This is an ambitious goal, but with Hungary and Slovakia unwilling to budge easily, it’s uncertain how effectively the EU can implement this strategy without internal conflicts.

What Does This Mean for the World and Us?

The extension of sanctions means pressure on the Russian economy will remain strong, but the energy crisis in Europe is likely to persist. Energy prices have already surged, and countries like Croatia have felt fuel price hikes. On the other hand, Hungary and Slovakia are trying to preserve their energy sources, which could cause further tensions within the EU.

Conclusion: EU Fighting Itself and Russia

As the EU continues to impose sanctions on Russia, internal divisions threaten to weaken its stance. Hungary and Slovakia are like those annoying relatives at a family dinner who refuse to agree on anything, while everyone else watches and wonders — will we ever get out of this energy mess?
