In the city of Goma, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the rebel group M23 has taken control following an incursion and clashes with the army. Goma has become a war zone with many casualties and wounded, and hospitals are overwhelmed. The rebels, composed of ethnic Tutsis, claim they are fighting for minority rights, while the Congolese government believes they seek control over mineral wealth, with support from Rwanda. Residents are facing unsafe conditions, and many have fled the city. M23 is strengthening its control.
