African Swine Fever and Mysterious Livestock Deaths: Who’s to Blame for the Regional Chaos?

African Swine Fever and Mysterious Livestock Deaths: Who’s to Blame for the Regional Chaos?

In the past two weeks, a livestock massacre has unfolded in Gornje Maovice near Vrlika in Zagora – 50 cows have died, and the cause? Still unknown! The president of the Croatian Veterinary Chamber, Ivan Zemljak, says infectious diseases are ruled out and suspects poisoning. However, toxicological analyses, which can take time, are still pending since they are conducted at only one facility, causing delays.

Zemljak clearly stated, “When we have this many deaths and infectious diseases are excluded, poisoning seems likely.” Meanwhile, farmers watch helplessly as their cattle die almost daily, with no clue what exactly poisoned the animals.

But that’s not the only problem in the region. African Swine Fever (ASF) is once again ravaging eastern Croatia and Serbia. New outbreaks have been confirmed in Vukovar-Srijem and Osijek-Baranja counties in Croatia, where 16 pigs were euthanized due to the disease. In Serbia, three active ASF hotspots exist in the Mačva, Podunavlje, and West Bačka districts, with the latest case reported in the village of Bogojevo.

Veterinarians and authorities warn that ASF is highly contagious, spreading through direct contact, contaminated food, clothing, and vehicles. The biggest problem? Irresponsible individuals ignoring biosecurity measures, leading to disease spread and new outbreaks. Croatia has implemented strict biosecurity protocols, including disinfection barriers, special work clothes, and enhanced farm sanitation.

Hunters are also involved in fighting the disease since the virus circulates among wild boars, the main reservoir of infection. Without joint cooperation between farmers, vets, and hunters, controlling the disease is nearly impossible.

So, while cattle mysteriously die from suspected poisoning in Zagora, pigs are dying en masse from deadly African Swine Fever in neighboring regions. Is this just a coincidence or a sign that the region is in total chaos regarding livestock farming and veterinary control?

If you have your own thoughts or have heard rumors about these events, feel free to share – maybe together we can uncover who’s really to blame for this mess!

Why does this matter?

  • 50 cows died in Zagora in two weeks
  • Infectious diseases ruled out, poisoning suspected
  • New African Swine Fever cases in Croatia and Serbia
  • 16 pigs euthanized in Croatia due to ASF
  • Three active ASF hotspots in Serbia
  • Irresponsible individuals and ignored biosecurity measures are main culprits

This isn’t just a problem for farmers but for all of us who eat meat and live in this region. So, what do you think – will anyone ever admit responsibility? Or will we keep watching animals die and stay silent?
