AFRICAN SWINE FEVER STRIKES AGAIN! While Croatia battles new cases in Vukovar-Srijem and Osijek-Baranja counties, Serbia is not far behind – 212 pigs have been euthanized in Bogatić! Who is really looking out for the farmers losing their livestock and livelihoods?
What’s Happening in Croatia?
Croatia has confirmed a new outbreak of African swine fever in the municipality of Štitar, Vukovar-Srijem County. The veterinary inspection is monitoring the situation, but the disease is spreading – from July 2 to 14, eight infected pig farms were confirmed across three municipalities. Preventive euthanasia was carried out on 16 pigs in the village of Bolman, and this year there have been nine outbreaks with over 100 pigs euthanized.
Panic in Serbia: 212 Pigs Euthanized in Bogatić
In Serbia, the situation is even more dramatic. Six hotspots of the disease were discovered in Crna Bara near Bogatić, and in the last few days, 212 pigs have been euthanized! The virus was detected a few days ago in one household where 41 pigs were euthanized. Farmers are panicking, and veterinary services are urging strict adherence to preventive measures.
How Does the Disease Spread?
African swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted through direct contact, contaminated food, tools, clothing, or animals. While it poses no risk to humans, it is deadly and incurable for pigs.
Who Bears the Cost?
Farmers are paying the highest price. Milan Todorović from Serbia says that in his neighborhood, livestock has been destroyed, while his farm is still safe, but everyone knows the disease must be stopped. Luka Milinčić from Crna Bara urges everyone to report every case of pig death and not to hide anything, as only this way can further spread be prevented.
Is the State Ready?
Veterinary inspections are under pressure, and preventive measures are strict, but are they enough? With over 200 pigs euthanized in Serbia and dozens in Croatia, it’s clear the disease is not slowing down. Farmers fear for their future, and the question remains: who will compensate their losses?
Conclusion
African swine fever is a nightmare for livestock farmers in the region. As the virus spreads, farmers lose their animals and livelihoods. Will authorities manage to stop this disaster, or will we watch farms empty out? Got a story or experience with this disease? Drop a comment – maybe your word helps someone in trouble!
