What a Disaster! The Albanian champions, footballers of Egnatia, suffered a humiliating defeat in the second leg of the first qualifying round of the Champions League. After the first match where Icelandic Breidablik won 1-0, the second match was a total catastrophe for Egnatia. The Icelanders crushed them with an unbelievable 5-0 scoreline! Yes, you read that right – five goals! Torsteinson and Einarson were double scorers, and Omarson set the final score. Already by halftime, the Icelanders led 4-0, and in the second half, they just confirmed their dominance.
What is happening with the Albanian champions? Obviously, they were not ready for this level of competition. Egnatia is now eliminated from the Champions League and will have to settle for lower European competitions. Breidablik, on the other hand, advances to the second round of qualifiers.
Is this a disgrace for Albanian football? Many would say yes. Losing 5-0 in the second leg and 6-0 on aggregate is an unprecedented embarrassment. There is clearly a huge quality gap between leagues and clubs. While Icelandic clubs are progressing and surprising, Albanian champions struggle to keep up.
What next? Egnatia will have to go back to the drawing board and seriously work on strengthening the squad if they want to return to European competitions with dignity. And Breidablik? They have shown they are ready for the next step and might surprise us even more.
Bonus: What else is happening in the sports world? Italian tennis player Janik Sinner won Wimbledon, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final, while Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic retained his sixth place in the ATP rankings. In football, Manchester United is interested in Emiliano Martinez, while Serbian clubs have had mixed results in European qualifiers.

One thing is for sure – European football is not for the faint-hearted!
