Annual Memorial for Policeman Nikola Krsmanović: Heroism and Tragedy at Serbia’s Border

Hero on Duty, Victim of the System: Annual Memorial for Nikola Krsmanović

Today, we remember young policeman Nikola Krsmanović, who tragically lost his life last year while defending the security of Serbia and its citizens. His death is not just a personal tragedy but a warning to all of us about the dangers and challenges faced by our police officers on the ground.

Nikola was killed during a vehicle check near Loznica, when an Albanian named Faton Hajrizi, who had previously escaped from prison where he was serving a sentence for criminal acts, shot him. His colleague Vjekoslav Ilić was wounded in the shoulder during the incident.

At the annual memorial attended by the Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić, the police director, and other high officials, it was emphasized that the Ministry of Internal Affairs remains permanently committed to preserving the memory of Nikola and all police officers who have laid down their lives in the line of duty. The Krsmanović family can always count on the support and assistance of the Ministry.

Ivica Dačić wrote on his Instagram account: “Today, with the Krsmanović family, we mark the annual memorial of our Nikola Krsmanović. We share the sorrow and pain of the family, we are always there. Serbia never forgets heroes who laid down their lives performing the honorable duty of a Serbian policeman. Nikola will live forever in our hearts. Eternal glory and thanks to him!”

This event reminds us how important it is to respect and appreciate those who risk their lives every day to keep our country safe. But does the state and society really do enough to protect their heroes? Can criminals like Hajrizi still threaten security at the borders?

As we remember Nikola, we cannot help but ask – how many more lives must be lost before the system changes? Will there ever be a real stop to crime and a guarantee of safety for those who protect us?

If you have your opinion on how the state should treat its police officers and border security, or want to share a story, feel free to join the conversation. Let the voice of hero Nikola not fade away, and the questions he raises remain open for all of us.

Annual Memorial for Nikola Krsmanović – The Hero Who Should Not Have Fallen

Last year left a deep mark in all our hearts when young policeman Nikola Krsmanović lost his life fighting for the security of Serbia. His death is not just a statistic but a symbol of the fight against crime that still threatens our borders.

Faton Hajrizi, an Albanian from Kosovo and Metohija who shot Nikola, had escaped from prison where he was serving a sentence for criminal acts. This fact casts a shadow on the effectiveness of the system that failed to prevent a dangerous criminal from threatening lives again.

At the annual memorial, Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić and Police Director Dragan Vasiljević, together with the family and colleagues, paid tribute to Nikola. The Ministry of Internal Affairs clearly stated it will remember all police officers who gave their lives for Serbia.

Dačić emotionally stated on Instagram that Serbia will never forget its heroes, and the Krsmanović family can count on the support of the state. But is that enough?

This tragedy raises questions about border security, about a system that fails to prevent criminals from threatening lives again, and about how the state values its heroes.

As we remember Nikola, let us also remember all those who risk their lives daily, and ask ourselves – what can we do to prevent such tragedies from happening again?

If you have something to say on this topic or want to express your opinion on security and the police, join the conversation. Let the voice of Nikola and his heroism be heard louder than ever.
