Baltic States Buy American HIMARS: Preparing for Russian Threat or Sparking New War?
The American High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) has become a star in the Ukraine conflict, and now the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – are buying it too. Why? Because they fear that Russia might attack them next, after Ukraine!
This system, produced by American giant Lockheed Martin, allows precise strikes at long distances – up to 70 kilometers. Ukrainians have used it to destroy Russian ammunition depots, command centers, and aircraft. Although the system’s effectiveness in Ukraine has declined due to Russian electronic jamming and ammunition shortages, it remains a key part of Ukraine’s capabilities.
The Baltic states, sharing a border with Russia, do not want to be passive passengers in NATO. They plan to make HIMARS their main weapon for defense, believing that the ability to conduct deep strikes is crucial. Estonia’s Defense Minister Hano Pevkur clearly stated that this system sends a message to Russia not to attack.
But it’s not just about HIMARS. The Baltic states are increasing defense budgets, buying tanks, strengthening air defense, and developing electronic warfare capabilities. They are part of NATO’s so-called “first line of defense” along with Poland and expect the entire alliance to help defend the region.
However, there is another side to the coin. Procuring American weapons may further escalate tensions with Russia and potentially provoke new conflicts. Are the Baltic states buying HIMARS to defend themselves or to spark a new arms race?
In any case, it is clear that the war in Ukraine has changed Europe’s security dynamics, and the Baltic states are not playing around – they take the threat seriously and are ready to invest huge resources in defense.
What do you think? Is buying HIMARS a smart move or just another step towards escalating conflict? Drop a comment and let your voice be heard!
