Beginner Motorcyclist Mistakes: Why Your First Bike Could Cost You Your Life

Motorcycling is no joke for beginners who think they can master it overnight. Mistakes are part of learning, but some mistakes can cost you your life! A beginner is someone with less than three years of experience or who just passed their motorcycle license test. And no, a beginner is not someone riding a “beginner” bike, but someone who hasn’t yet mastered the basic riding skills.

First and foremost: personal protective gear is more important than the motorcycle itself. A bike is just metal that can be replaced, but you are irreplaceable! There isn’t a single motorcyclist who wished they didn’t have full gear at the moment of an accident. So, before buying a bike, buy your full gear first.

Braking is one of the most critical skills. Pros can stop a bike going 60 km/h in 17.5 meters, but beginners might need up to 30 meters! Why? Slow reaction, fear of locking the wheels, and not using both brakes properly. So practice braking, slalom, and cornering on a training ground.

Choosing your first motorcycle is crucial. Too big, too heavy, or too powerful bikes are a nightmare for beginners. Your first bike should be cheap, light, and less powerful. This way, you can learn, fall, and fix mistakes without major consequences.

False confidence and relying on electronic aids can lead to disaster. An electric scooter is not the same as a motorcycle, no matter the engine size.

Group rides are awesome but can be hell for beginners. No one will wait or look out for you, and riding outside your comfort zone often ends in a crash. If you can’t keep up, better ride alone.

Speed is not the goal itself. Speed comes as a result of competent and safe riding. If you think skills will save you in every situation, you’re wrong. Entering a corner too fast with unexpected hazards can be fatal.

Finally, maintain your bike and take care of yourself. The more you care for your bike, the more it will care for you. Motorcycling is for those who know what they’re doing, not for those who think it’s just fun.

If you’re a beginner or know one, share your stories or funny crashes in the comments. Who knows, maybe your mistake will save someone’s life!
