Belgrade Blockades: Police, Students, and Chaos in the Streets

For the fourth day in a row, Belgrade is gripped by blockades and protests shaking the Serbian capital. Streets are mostly passable, but protesters refuse to back down – organizing mobile and static blockades that wreak havoc on traffic and annoy citizens.

Police are out in force, especially around universities, with vehicles parked and officers on duty to keep traffic moving. Yet incidents are unavoidable – the third night of blockades saw clashes, arrests, and removal of blockades. People even rammed cars into protesters, escalating tensions further.

These blockades aren’t just in Belgrade – protests are spreading across Serbia, including Novi Sad and Niš. The protesters, mostly students, demand early parliamentary elections and the release of detained activists. What started as a peaceful protest is now heating up.

In Novi Sad, blockades were organized to protest a tragedy eight months ago when a canopy collapse killed 16 people. Students and citizens refuse to give up, while police continue arrests and clearing blockades, fueling more discontent.

This situation casts a shadow over daily life in Belgrade and other cities. Traffic is disrupted, public transport is struggling, and citizens are caught in the middle of chaos between protesters and police.

Will these protests lead to real change, or end up as just another street battle? One thing’s clear – Belgrade and Serbia are on the edge of an explosion, with streets turned into battlegrounds between authorities and frustrated youth.
