Belgrade-Budapest High-Speed Rail: Chinese Friendship or Serbian Headache?

Chinese Speed or Serbian Slowpoke?

Here it is, the project that was supposed to be the pride of Serbia and China – the Belgrade-Budapest high-speed rail! Officially, it’s a “confirmation of friendship” between Serbia and China, with Presidents Vučić and Xi Jinping probably holding hands as the rails rise. But is it really all sunshine and rainbows?

At a recent meeting in Beijing, the Serbian delegation, led by Milan Petrović and Zoran Jevtić, had the chance to ride the most modern Chinese train speeding at 350 km/h. Sounds like sci-fi for us, where trains still stumble over bureaucracy and lack of funds.

Belt and Road or Just Another Chinese Investment?

This project is part of China’s mega plan “Belt and Road” – a giant promise to connect Europe and Asia. Serbia is a key player here, but is it really a win for us or just another way for China to expand its influence?

Chinese Railways promise knowledge and technology exchange, but will Serbia truly benefit or will it remain just on paper?

Friendship or Conspiracy?

While Beijing boasts cooperation, people at home wonder – how much will this cost us? Will the high-speed rail really connect Belgrade and Budapest or will it remain a dream?

And while presidents smile, ordinary people stare blankly, wondering when they will actually feel the benefits of these big projects.

Conclusion

The Belgrade-Budapest high-speed rail is more than just a railway – it’s a symbol, political and economic. But is it a symbol of progress or just another fairy tale?
