Belgrade is on fire, and firefighters are battling a raging inferno that just won’t quit! On Zvezdara, in Vojvode Brane street, a fire broke out in an apartment on the second floor, with flames bursting through the windows and smoke filling the street. There’s no word yet on injuries, but emergency crews are on the scene fighting the blaze. And this isn’t the only fire hitting Belgrade — near the Obrenovac toll station, a massive fire engulfed a car and spread along the entire street, shutting down traffic and sending thick black smoke into the sky. Firefighters were dispatched to both locations, but their resources are stretched to the limit. Meanwhile, in Podgorica, the situation is no better — the municipalities of Tuzi and Zeta have had no local fire departments for seven years, relying on Podgorica’s team of just 56 firefighters, 8 of whom are currently on sick leave. Over one weekend, a staggering 62 fires were recorded, highlighting the system’s inefficiency and the urgent need to establish local firefighting units. Without them, residents are left at the mercy of the flames. Will Belgrade and its surroundings be ready for next summer? We doubt it, as the problems run deep and solutions are slow.
