Belgrade is melting under the sun like never before! While temperatures in the city soar up to 40 degrees Celsius, the asphalt in some parts reaches a hellish 50 degrees! Yes, you read that right — 50! Welcome to the world of heat islands, where concrete and asphalt turn urban areas into a blazing furnace.
What are heat islands? They are parts of the city where temperatures are significantly higher than in surrounding rural areas. Why? Because concrete, asphalt, buildings, and human activity absorb and retain heat. In Belgrade, especially in the city center and New Belgrade, the number of tropical nights — when temperatures don’t drop below 20 degrees — can reach up to 50 per year! This means the city literally doesn’t cool down at night, which is a disaster for health, especially for the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
The heat island map shows the worst-hit zones between Nikola Tesla Boulevard and Milutin Milanković Boulevard, as well as former industrial areas now covered in concrete. Even the Sava Amphitheater, once a green oasis, is now concrete jungle heating up like an oven.
Green spaces and parks are the only salvation! Temperatures there are up to 6 degrees lower, and tree shade plus evapotranspiration cool the air. But with urban development swallowing green areas, the question is how many will remain.
This problem isn’t just about looks — heat islands increase air pollution, slow down winds, and cause health problems. Belgrade is currently the European champion in this asphalt hell.
If you think this is just another hot summer story, think again. These temperatures are dangerous and can be deadly. So next time you step outside and feel the asphalt burning your feet, remember — the city is on fire, and we’re in the middle of hell.
So, isn’t it time we all ask ourselves where to run when the city turns into an oven? Or maybe it’s time to start appreciating every single tree leaf in the city? Share your thoughts or just drop a sarcastic comment — because if we can’t beat the heat, we might as well laugh while we melt!
