Belgrade turned into a chaos zone last night! In just one night, several traffic accidents happened, claiming one life and injuring at least four people. Ambulance crews worked until early morning, struggling to reach all the injured, while alcohol and chronic illnesses added extra pressure on their teams.
It all started around 9:23 PM at the corner of Mokroluška and Vojislava Ilića streets, where a motorcyclist lost his life in a crash with a car. The car was completely wrecked, and four people were rushed to the Emergency Center. Just an hour and a half later, on the New Obrenovac Road, a 22-year-old young man was lightly injured, while in New Belgrade, at the corner of Vojvođanska and Dr. Ivana Ribara streets, a 27-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were injured and taken to the Zemun Clinical Center.
The ambulance service had 24 regular teams and five extra teams deployed due to protests in the city, which made the situation even tougher. Besides traffic accidents, there were multiple interventions for minor injuries and alcohol poisoning, and chronic patients like hypertensives, asthmatics, and psychiatric patients further burdened the services.
This night showed how vulnerable Belgrade is and how stretched the emergency services are. Will anyone finally take responsibility for street safety, or will we keep counting victims and injured?
