Why is marshmallow root so expensive?
Zoran Ilić, director of the agricultural cooperative in Gadžin Han, reveals that growing marshmallow is extremely profitable but demanding. The plant requires two fertilizations and protective treatments, which raise costs to about 1 euro per square meter. Additionally, marshmallow requires manual cleaning, making it the hardest to process. In comparison, marigold requires less investment but is physically the most demanding to harvest.
Tough years for medicinal herb producers
The last two years have not been kind to producers. The pandemic reduced plantings, and last year’s drought halved yields – about 40% less than before. The cooperative includes 15 members and 50 partners from various parts of Serbia, but success is not guaranteed.

Although marshmallow root commands a high price, costs are significant. Investments per square meter are about 1 euro, and income can reach up to 7 euros. Marigold brings in less profit but also less risk. Producers must have a registered agricultural farm and undergo training in land cultivation. Organic production is not mandatory, but experience is key.
