Belgrade Under Mosquito Siege: City Sanitation Launches Battle, But Is It Enough?

Belgrade Under Mosquito Siege: City Sanitation Launches Battle, But Is It Enough?

Welcome to Belgrade, the city that this summer just can’t sleep because of… mosquitoes! Yes, you read that right. While we all suffer from these tiny, annoying bloodsuckers, the City Sanitation Service has decided to fight back. But is their action enough to save us from what has become a real nightmare this summer?

The Big Mosquito Control Operation

Our city sanitation team hasn’t been sitting idle. Starting July 11, they began treating adult mosquitoes in Belgrade. The treatment happens in the evening, from 8:30 PM, across multiple hotspots known for mosquito breeding: Lešće Cemetery, New Bežanija Cemetery, Slanci, Veliko Selo, Sajmište, 13. Maj, Goveđi Brod, Ada Huja, Višnjica by the Danube, Bele Stene, Vinča by the Danube, Ritopek, Grocka by the Danube, and Brestovik.

But wait, is there a catch?

Of course, as always, it depends on the weather. If it rains, or if the wind is too strong, or temperatures drop, the treatment is postponed. So if you thought mosquitoes would vanish overnight, think again. These little bloodsuckers are tough nuts to crack, and nature sometimes gives them a helping hand.

What do they use and is it safe?

The sanitation crews use products registered and approved by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. That means no need to panic — the treatments are safe for citizens. Still, beekeepers are warned to take precautions to protect their bees, as insecticides can affect them too.

Is this a solution or just a temporary fix?

While it’s commendable that the city sanitation is trying to control the mosquito population, the question remains — is it enough? Mosquitoes breed fast, and these treatments are just a nightly patrol in a war that lasts all day. Should Belgrade consider longer-term solutions, like removing standing water and educating the public?

Conclusion: Mosquitoes are enemies we must not underestimate

This year, Belgrade is under siege by mosquitoes like never before. The City Sanitation has launched a control campaign, but will it be enough to save our summer? While we wait for results, maybe it’s time for us to take action too — from protective nets to sprays. Because if mosquitoes win, this summer will be remembered as the season of endless itching.

What about you? Have you already had your run-in with these tiny bloodsuckers? Share your stories, maybe together we’ll figure out how to beat them! Or at least have a laugh while they bite us.
