BRICS Summit in Rio: Global Powers Fighting for Justice or Just Another Show?

Welcome to Rio de Janeiro, where the world’s power players have gathered for the 17th BRICS Summit. But is this really a fight for justice or just another political show? Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proudly declared that the admission of new countries proves BRICS can evolve and adapt with the times. But let’s be real — two-thirds of humanity still lacks proper representation in global institutions formed back in the 20th century. Will BRICS truly change the world or just remain another club of powerful folks who talk a lot but do little?

Iran made it clear at the summit that the UN Charter and international legal system must protect territorial integrity and state sovereignty. Abbas Arakchi, Iran’s foreign minister, didn’t hold back, condemning Israeli aggression that caused death and injury to many civilians. Will this rhetoric bring peace or just escalate tensions further?

Russia, of course, was center stage. President Vladimir Putin addressed the summit via video link, while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov attended in person. BRICS leaders condemned attacks on Russian railway infrastructure near the Ukrainian border, where civilians, including children, were killed. Though they called for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, Putin told Donald Trump in a phone call that Russia will continue its war objectives. Is this a call for peace or just another power play?

The BRICS declaration also slammed recent US and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as violations of international law. They criticized the presence of foreign forces in Syria, demanding Israel withdraw from Syrian territory. It sounds like BRICS is trying to position itself as a defender of international law — but is that reality or just political theater?

And don’t forget, Brazil, the summit host, is a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and a signatory to the Rome Statute, meaning they are obligated to arrest Putin if he sets foot on their soil due to an arrest warrant issued in March 2023 for the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children. This summit is packed with contradictions and tensions just waiting to explode.

Bottom line? BRICS boasts reforms and a fight for justice, but the world watches skeptically. Will this group of powerhouses really reshape the global order or just remain a stage for political games? Maybe it’s time we all openly ask — who’s really running the show here? What do you think? Is BRICS the world’s hope or just another farce? Drop a comment, stir the pot, or just laugh at this global soap opera!
