Can you believe the European Union, which prides itself on fighting fascism, simply turned a blind eye to a concert by Croatian singer Marko Perković Thompson in Zagreb, where half a million people chanted the Ustaše salute “Za dom spremni”? Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić calls it a disgrace! While half a million people in Croatia celebrate crimes and a fascist past, the EU remains silent as if nothing is happening.
Brnabić sharply condemned the EU’s reaction, or rather, the complete lack of reaction to this concert held in Zagreb. “They would have been better off staying silent than spouting empty political phrases,” Brnabić told Pink TV. She reminded that the EU was silent three years ago when Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić was not allowed to visit Jasenovac, the site of the massacre of thousands of Serbs, Jews, and Roma during World War II.
She emphasized that Croatia is an EU member with 3.5 million inhabitants, yet half a million people gathered there to celebrate Ustaše crimes and chant “Za dom spremni” — a salute equivalent to the Nazi “Sieg Heil.” Brnabić recalled that the Ustaše killed Serbs, Jews, and Roma in the most monstrous ways, and that this genocide must never be forgotten.
She also noted that she spoke with Israeli officials who were shocked by these events, as 80 years after the end of World War II, an EU member state not only relativizes Nazi crimes but fully supports them.
Brnabić announced that Serbia will work even harder on establishing memorial centers for the victims, both in Belgrade and in Republika Srpska, to ensure such things are not forgotten and to fight fascism and genocide.
