Imagine a bunch of old, abandoned industrial zones that nobody wants. Now imagine those same zones could become a goldmine for Montenegro and its sustainable development. Yes, you read that right! The brownfield project, carried out under the Interreg Danube Regional Programme with a budget of nearly 2.4 million euros, of which 1.92 million euros come from EU funds, is not just another boring environmental story. This is a real industrial revolution that could change the game.
Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) is the host of this project and proud owner of key brownfield sites, like the halls of the former steelworks in Nikšić. These sites, once symbols of industrial decay and abandonment, are now in focus as places for smart reindustrialization. Marija Janjušević, communications manager and event moderator, highlights that the brownfield approach offers a bunch of advantages: existing infrastructure, less environmental impact, and faster investment realization.
But wait, it’s not just a story about concrete and factories. Aleksandar Perović, director of NGO Ozon, sees potential in the former steelworks to develop a center for projects in environmental protection and sustainable industry. So, it’s not just about industry, but also ecology and social responsibility.
The project gathers 17 partners from seven European countries, led by the Chamber of Commerce of Slovenia, and started in January last year. Participants exchanged experiences, agreed on next steps, and clearly showed that brownfield is not just an option but a vision for the future.
Is Montenegro ready to become a leader in this green industrial revolution? If yes, the brownfield project is the perfect chance to prove it. And if you’re not sure, just look at how much money the EU is investing in this idea — nearly two million euros! That’s no small change.
So, what do you think? Is brownfield the future or just another nice story? Drop a comment, share your thoughts, or just laugh at the ghosts of industrial past. This story is just beginning, and we’re here to watch it unfold!
