The Books of Knjige Awarded the 12th July Prize: Artistic Statement or Political Message?
This year, instead of the expected prestigious 13th July Award, the well-known Montenegrin artistic group “The Books of Knjige” received the 12th July Award. Yes, you read that right – not the highest state honor, but one given as a sort of artistic performance.
At the opening of the 38th Bar Summer Festival, literary program selector Milun Lutovac presented the award in the form of an unfinished artwork with an inscribed message. In his explanation, Lutovac emphasized that the hero of our time is no longer a historical or future figure, but merely a product, a sports fashion brand, packaging, advertisement – a real broadcast. What remains? The game of chance and the myth of gossip, which have become the new rulers of communication.
This award goes to those who, “between two fires,” shape the images of so-called heroes of their own destiny. Zoran “Zonjo” Marković, a member of the Cetinje troupe, accepted the award on behalf of “The Books of Knjige.”
What’s behind this award?
While the 13th July Award, the highest state award, was not given to “The Books of Knjige” this year, the awarding of the 12th July Prize can be interpreted as a critique or even a protest against official cultural policies. Lutovac’s speech clearly pointed to contemporary social phenomena – where people are reduced to products and brands, and true art and personality lose their significance.
Jovović and the shadow of compromise
Ivan Jovović, president of the Montenegrin Matica, on the occasion of Statehood Day, July 13th, commented on the compromised awarding of the 13th July Prize. He criticized the jury and pointed to an institutional crisis in Montenegro lasting five years. Jovović believes that current authorities and their representatives have introduced historical revisionism into public discourse, threatening peace and social order.
He stressed that the values of July 13th, symbolizing freedom and statehood, must be preserved and that political resistance is needed against those working to destroy Montenegrin identity and tradition.
Culture caught in the whirlpool of politics
This situation with awards and public statements shows how intertwined culture in Montenegro is with politics. Instead of being a space for freedom and creativity, culture becomes an arena for political messages and conflicts.
The awarding of the 12th July Prize as an artistic performance can be seen as a sharp critique of the system and a call to reflect on true values in society.
Conclusion: Is art today just a game of chance?
While “The Books of Knjige” receive an award symbolizing incompleteness and a game of chance, the question remains – where is the place for true art and freedom of expression in Montenegro? Has culture become just a product and brand, or does it still have the power to change society?
If you have your own take on this cultural-political soap opera, feel free to share it. Maybe it’s time we all play this game of chance together and see who ends up the real winner.
