Drivers from Bulgaria and Romania are among the most dangerous in Europe, according to data from the European Transport Safety Council. The main causes of accidents are excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, and poor road conditions. Bulgaria records 79% more fatalities in traffic accidents than the EU average, with Romania following closely behind. Poor road conditions and the age of the vehicle fleet further contribute to the high mortality rate. The average age of cars in Bulgaria is over 17 years.
