Chaos in Belgrade’s public transport! As traffic gets blocked off from time to time, people are left wondering – how on earth does the public transport system even work? The Secretariat for Public Transport and JKP GSP Belgrade claim everything runs in real time, but is that really true?
Every moment of traffic blockades is monitored 24/7 through surveillance cameras, traffic police, and vehicle staff. Information is immediately sent to the operational control center, which changes bus, tram, and trolleybus routes on the fly. But what happens when there’s no alternative? Lines get pulled, and electronic stop signs go dark because they no longer receive info about incoming vehicles.
Imagine standing at a stop staring at a dead LED display while the bus you waited for drives some other route or is parked in the garage. The Secretariat promises to soon install predefined messages at stops clearly indicating temporary traffic blockades. But until then – chaos reigns!
Trams and trolleybuses shut down early because they can’t be rerouted, while buses try to run as much as possible. All this while citizens try to get to work, school, or anywhere else.
Is this a functioning system or just on-the-spot improvisation? And how long will we put up with these public transport nightmares? If you’ve ever stood at a stop watching a dead display, you know exactly what we mean.
