Chief Prosecutor Under Brutal Attacks: Justice or Witch Hunt?

In the past week, the Chief Public Prosecutor of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade has been targeted by brutal attacks and false accusations. He has been subjected to inappropriate pressure at least four times, and his colleagues have not been spared either. All this due to allegations that he abuses his powers to persecute opposition activists and rebellious students, which the prosecutor’s office categorically denies.

Who is behind the attacks?

The attacks come from multiple sides: opposition politicians, informal groups of judges and prosecutors, and individuals on social media. The Democratic Party even sent an official request to the EU demanding sanctions against the Chief Prosecutor for alleged brutal repression of citizens. Lawyer Ivana S. Krsmanović filed a disciplinary complaint seeking his dismissal.

Justice or political game?

The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade claims it has borne the greatest burden prosecuting those committing crimes involving violence during protests, causing riots, attacking police officers, and blocking public transport. They state this is an attempt to weaken and discredit the judiciary while protests continue and become more violent.

What does the Chief Prosecutor propose?

Due to these circumstances, the Chief Prosecutor has requested an extraordinary session of the High Prosecutorial Council to condemn such conduct and protect the independence of prosecutors. He emphasizes the need for more effective action, as previous delays and evasions have only harmed the judicial system.

Conclusion

Is this a fight for justice or a political witch hunt? The Chief Prosecutor and his team claim to be doing their job according to the law, while others accuse them of abuse. In any case, the situation is alarming and casts a shadow over the independence of the judiciary in Serbia.
