Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated that cocaine is no worse than whiskey and is illegal because it comes from Latin America. Petro believes that the global cocaine industry could be dismantled by legalizing the drug. He also pointed out that fentanyl, responsible for numerous deaths in the U.S., is not produced in Colombia. Since taking office, Petro has been attempting to reconcile with armed groups involved in drug trafficking to end the conflicts. Colombia remains the largest producer of cocaine, with production reaching record levels.
Cocaine is illegal because it’s from Latin America.
