Commemoration of the Assassination of King Alexander Obrenović and Queen Draga

Today at Tašmajdan, in the Church of St. Mark, the anniversary of the assassination of King Alexander Obrenović and Queen Draga was commemorated, one of the most tragic events in Serbian history. Prince Philip Karađorđević and Princess Danica laid a laurel wreath on the royal couple’s grave, showing respect for their tragic fate. The memorial service was conducted by Bishop Tihon of Moravica with the clergy. Prince Philip emphasized the importance of remembering this event and recalled King Alexander’s merits, including saving the Hilandar Monastery and efforts towards the unity of the Serbian people. The royal couple was assassinated during the May Coup of 1903, when a group of officers and politicians dissatisfied with the king’s decisions carried out the coup. After their death, Prince Peter Karađorđević ascended the Serbian throne.
