Congo and Rwanda Sign Peace Deal: End of Conflict or Just the Start of New Drama?
Is this really the end of one of Africa’s longest and bloodiest conflicts, or just another pause in an endless drama? Congo and Rwanda, with US mediation, have signed a peace agreement aimed at ending the conflict in eastern Congo, where thousands have lost their lives. But is this truly the end, or just the beginning of a new power game?
What Happened?
On June 28, in Washington, Congo and Rwanda formally signed an agreement intended to put an end to the fighting in eastern Congo. The deal is based on principles agreed upon back in April, including respect for territorial integrity and cessation of hostilities following an offensive led by the armed group M23.
US President Donald Trump welcomed the agreement but stressed that much work remains. Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe said the deal marks the end of state support for armed groups like FDLR, while Congo’s Minister Terez Kajikvamba Wagner warned this is just the beginning, not the end, of the conflict.
Why Has the Conflict Lasted So Long?
The conflict in eastern Congo has deep roots going back to the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The fight over control of rich mineral resources has further complicated matters. M23, the armed group that captured key cities like Goma and Bukavu, is often accused of receiving support from Rwanda, which denies these claims, stating its forces act in self-defense against militias linked to genocide perpetrators.
The United Nations and independent analysts claim Rwanda militarily supports M23, including supplying weapons and sending troops, which has escalated the conflict.
What Does the Agreement Include?
The agreement calls for the transformation, disarmament, and conditional integration of non-state armed groups, as well as establishing joint security mechanisms. However, given the complexity and deep divisions, many remain skeptical about whether this deal will truly bring peace.
Profit from Resources or Peace?
BBC notes that the US may gain profitable access to the region’s mineral resources, casting doubt on the genuine intentions behind the peace deal. Is peace really the goal, or just a means to control wealth?
Conclusion: End of Conflict or Just a Pause?
While signing the agreement is a big step, the reality is this is just the start of a long and difficult road to peace. Thousands of lives have been lost, and the conflict is deeply rooted in history and economic interests. Will this deal truly end the fighting, or will we soon see another round of violence?
Either way, time will tell if both sides will honor the agreement or if this will be just another chapter in the long saga of regional conflict.
