Just when you think you’ve seen it all in water polo, Croatia proves you wrong! At the World Championship in Singapore, our “Barracudas” played a match to remember against Montenegro and showed why they are one of the most dangerous teams on the planet. After warming up against China, a real fireworks display followed – a victory over Montenegro by three goals, which catapulted us to the top of the group and almost secured a spot in the quarterfinals. But it wasn’t easy! The Montenegrins were as tough as nails, with physical play and attacks that kept the match tense until the very end.
The first half was a real battle, with defenses setting the pace. Croatia drew a whopping 13 exclusions from the opponents, while our players had 7. The biggest lead was only two goals, but that was enough to maintain control. Montenegro was in the lead only once – in the third quarter, with a goal by naturalized Russian Dmitry Holod, successor to Belarusian Konstantin Averka.
Our players showed true tradition and fighting spirit. Josip Vrlić and Luka Lončar were pillars of defense, while Loren Fatović, although not the sharpest in finishing, sparked a series of six goals. Triple scorer Bukić missed the second “match point,” but our guys defended Montenegro’s last attack like true champions. Marko Bijač had 11 saves, and Rino Burić masterfully sealed the victory.
This win is crucial because with a minimal loss in the last group match against Greece, we can stay at the top of the group, which means direct qualification to the quarterfinals. And with three teams tied on points, our goal difference is the best in the triangle fight. So, it’s not over until it’s over, but the “Barracudas” have shown they are ready for big things!
