Imagine this: summer heat, traffic jams on Croatian highways, and you just want to cool down your car by opening the window. Well, believe it or not, that can cost you a 30 euro fine! Yes, you read that right! Croatia has decided not to spare fines for drivers who break the rules, and leaving your car window open when you leave the vehicle is one of those “crazy” offenses.
But that’s not all! Speeding in a residential area by just 10 km/h over the limit can cost you 30 euros. And if you dare to drive on the emergency lane to bypass a traffic jam, get ready for serious trouble — not just because of the fine, but because of the danger to life.
Drivers who flash their headlights at the car in front without a valid reason can get a 40 euro fine. Using a mobile phone while driving, except for calls, can cost you up to 120 euros. Not wearing a seatbelt, which many drivers do because of the heat, brings a 40 euro fine, and this applies to passengers in the back seats as well!
Another interesting fact: transporting children under 135 cm without a proper child seat results in a 150 euro fine. And if you leave your car with an open window unattended, the police can fine you 30 euros because you didn’t take measures to prevent the vehicle from being started or stolen.
And that’s not the end! Improper cargo transport, obscured license plates, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs — all can cost from 300 to 1,200 euros, and even up to 60 days in jail.
In short, Croatia has become a real fine paradise, and drivers risk losing money over seemingly harmless things. If you plan a trip, better prepare and follow the rules, because it can cost you more than you think.
And yes, if you thought driving on local roads is a smarter option to avoid tolls, think again — speeding there can also be expensive and dangerous.
So, what do you think? Is this over the top, or has Croatia finally decided to put reckless drivers in their place? Share your thoughts, maybe you have your own stories about fines you got or dodged. Don’t forget, an open window can be pricier than you think!
