Military Service is Back in Croatia – But with a Twist!
Are you ready to don the uniform again, but only for a short time? Croatia plans to introduce basic military training lasting from two to four months, not the old, endless conscription that once troubled the youth. And that’s not all – those who complete this training will be at the state’s disposal as reservists until the age of 55! Yes, you read that right – 30 years in the reserves!
Why is military service returning?
Ivan Anušić, the Minister of Defense, says it’s time to adapt to new circumstances and technologies. Wars are no longer fought like 15 years ago – now it’s cyber warfare, drones, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Croatia plans to modernize its army with tanks, HIMARS rocket systems, Patriot systems, Rafale jets, and much more.
How much will this cost?
Basic military training will cost around 20 million euros. Why so much? Because the army needs to be equipped for the 21st century, and that’s not cheap. But if you look at what we get – maybe it’s worth it.
Benefits for those who serve?
Those who complete military training will have advantages in employment as they will be reservists available to the state in case of any threat. Also, the military service is shorter for those who choose military training compared to civilian service.
Will this be popular?
Minister Anušić says they want to motivate young people to choose military training, while civilian service remains for those with conscientious objections.
Croatian industry and the army – a love for the future
Croatia wants to be independent in producing military equipment, especially drones. Young people are already developing small FPV drones that are currently important on the battlefield in Ukraine. Croatia could become a leader in the EU in producing these technologies.
What do you think? Are you for the return of military service? Or is it just another way for the state to have cheap labor under a uniform? Share your thoughts, maybe you’ll surprise us!
Conclusion
Military service is back, but in a new form. Shorter, more modern, with a clear goal to prepare Croatia for new war challenges. With a budget of 20 million euros and plans to modernize the army, this is not just a story about mandatory service but strategic planning. But as always, the question remains – how ready are young people to sacrifice for the country? And how ready is the country to adequately reward them?
