Big Toll Change: Heavy Vehicles Pay Less, Light Vehicles Pay More!

Attention drivers! Big changes are coming to Croatian highways starting July 1st. The Croatian Motorways company (HAC) is equalizing discounts for electronic toll collection (ENC). Heavy vehicles, which previously enjoyed much larger discounts, will now have a reduced discount of 21.74%, while light vehicles will get a higher discount of 21.74%. Seasonal discounts of 33.48% remain for certain periods, but emission-based discounts are being reduced or eliminated. Euro V and EEV discounts drop from 5% to 3%, Euro VI from 12% to 7%, and Euro IV discounts are removed. HAC claims this is a step towards a fairer and more sustainable toll system aligned with European standards. But is it really fair that heavy vehicles, which cause the most road damage, now pay less discount? Social media is already buzzing with outrage: “Only heavy vehicles destroy roads, and now they pay the least!” and “Introduce vignettes, you thieves!” This change is part of a broader investment cycle to modernize and secure infrastructure, but will drivers really feel it in their wallets? If you use an ENC device, expect new discounts and rules from July 1st. Got thoughts? Share them — maybe HAC is listening! Meanwhile, hold your steering wheel tight and your wallet tighter!
