In a village in the Odzaci municipality, farmers are on the brink of a meltdown because crows are wreaking havoc on their fields. Imagine this – two hectares of watermelons destroyed, and the damage doesn’t stop there! Corn, sunflower, cabbage, pepper – all are targets of these feathered bandits. Scarecrows, cannons, people – nothing works. Crows have become a real nightmare for farmers, and the main culprit for their habitat is the municipal landfill that burns during summer, forcing the birds to flee the smoke and end up in the fields. Sava Kompalić Deronja, a successful watermelon grower with 12 hectares, says this is the first time he has experienced such damage – two hectares of watermelons destroyed, fruits broken and unusable. Attempts at protection like string lines and scarecrows have proven futile. These crows fear nothing, the damage is huge, and they threaten to destroy the entire village’s agricultural production. Climatologists warn about drought and changes in agriculture, while farmers consider growing quinoa or bananas instead of wheat if this continues. This is not just one man’s problem but the whole village’s. Will someone finally find a solution to this bird invasion, or will we watch our agriculture perish? If you have ideas or have fought crows too, drop a comment and share your experience – maybe together we can save our fields!
