Demographic Measures of Cities and Municipalities: Gold Chains, Cash Rewards, and Parenting Support

Welcome to the wild world of demographic measures that have turned into a frenzy in Croatian cities and municipalities! While the world struggles with declining birth rates, our neighbors decided not to sit idly by. Cash rewards for getting married, gift packages for newborns, and even gold chains for babies – sounds like a joke from a crazy commercial, but it’s real! The small municipality of Ervenik in Šibenik-Knin County gives the groom a whopping 1,000 euros for getting married, while in Dugopolje newlyweds receive 500 euros. And that’s not all – in Milna, the first baby brings parents 1,000 euros, and for the second child, monthly support rises up to 80 euros! In Vela Luka, parents of the third child get a steady monthly allowance of 66.36 euros for five years, totaling over 3,900 euros. Komiža goes even further with monthly payments for the third and every subsequent child, totaling up to 14,000 euros! What about gift packages? Gold chains, pendants, even bottles of wine and jars of honey for newborns in Đurđevac! Some cities have gone a step further, offering free library memberships, free tickets to museums and theaters for the third and fourth child. But it’s not just about money – co-financing medically assisted reproduction has become standard in many places, with amounts up to 1,000 euros per procedure. While some cities fight demographic decline, others decided to ease parents’ burdens by covering therapy, transport, and specialized care costs for children with special needs. All in all, Croatia has become a paradise for parents, but what about Serbia? Maybe it’s time we start thinking about these “golden” measures too. Got a funny or shocking example from your area? Share it in the comments – let’s laugh or gasp together! Who knows, maybe your municipality will be the next to introduce a gold chain for babies!
