Denmark Ready to Use Nuclear Option Against Hungary in EU

EU on the Brink: Denmark Threatens Hungary with the Nuclear Option!

The EU is once again in the spotlight of scandal, and the main player is Hungary! Denmark, currently holding the EU presidency, can no longer stand by as Budapest violates the Union’s fundamental values and is ready to pull the most drastic move – activating the infamous Article 7, known as the “nuclear option”!

What is Article 7?

Article 7 of the EU treaty is like a red card in football, but way more serious. It is a legal mechanism that can lead to the suspension of a member state’s rights, including voting rights in the EU, if it is found to violate the Union’s core values. Until now, it has only been a threat, but Denmark says – it’s time to act!

Why Hungary?

Hungary has been under fire for years for violating human rights and EU rules. Denmark’s Minister for European Affairs, Marie Bjerre, clearly stated: “We are still witnessing violations of basic values.” Hungary has, among other things, blocked Ukraine’s EU membership, which further irritates other member states.

What would activating Article 7 mean?

If the EU decides to activate Article 7 against Hungary, Budapest could lose its voting rights on key issues, including its veto on EU enlargement. This would mean Hungary could no longer block Ukraine’s entry into the Union – currently its main leverage.

But it’s not that simple…

Diplomats warn that such a move requires strong support from Paris and Berlin, which is currently lacking. Without them, the whole action could remain a dead letter. Still, Denmark is not backing down and is ready to use all legal tools, including the possibility of restricting Hungary’s access to EU funds.

EU still stuck in a deadlock

While the EU struggles with internal divisions, the war in Ukraine continues, and Hungary uses its position to block key decisions. Will the EU finally put an end to these power games or collapse under its own pressures? One thing is certain – the drama is just beginning!

Conclusion

Denmark has thrown down the gauntlet to Hungary and the EU. Will other member states dare to press the “nuclear option” or will it all end in empty threats? Drop a comment, tell us what you think – is it time for the EU to show its teeth or is this just another political show?
