Diaspora Awards: Who Really Protects Montenegrin Identity?

Diaspora Under the Spotlight: Awards That Spark Controversy!

Every year, Montenegro’s Ministry of Diaspora hands out awards to outstanding members and organizations of the diaspora. But are these awards just a formality, or do they truly reflect who deserves recognition for preserving national identity and promoting Montenegro abroad?

Who Got Awarded? This year, out of 38 submitted initiatives and 33 candidates, awards were given to 26 individuals and 7 organizations. Among the recipients are Marinko Ćulafić from Albania for preserving state identity, Miloš Karadaglić from the United Kingdom for contributions to culture, Vasilije Mijović from the USA for science, and posthumously Miodrag Kostić from Serbia for enhancing economic partnership. The humanitarian organization Bratska Ruka from Switzerland received an award for philanthropy, and Refik Šabanadžović from Bosnia and Herzegovina for sports.

Diplomacy and Promotion of Montenegro – No Award This Year! Interestingly, the commission did not award anyone for contributions to diplomacy and promotion of Montenegro this year, as they found no proposal worthy of recognition. This sends a clear message that much more is expected from the diaspora in this area.

Why Does This Matter? Awards are more than just recognition – they send a message to the diaspora and the public about what the state values. Preserving national identity, developing cultural, scientific, and humanitarian ties, and improving economic partnerships are key goals. But are the awardees truly outstanding in these fields, or is this political theater?

Award Ceremony The award ceremony is scheduled for July 25 in Podgorica. It will be an opportunity to highlight the importance of the diaspora once again, but also to raise questions about the criteria and transparency of the selection process.

What Do You Think? Are these awards a true reflection of merit or just another bureaucratic ritual? Who do you think deserved recognition, and who was overlooked? Drop a comment and let the people’s voice be heard!
