EU Extends Sanctions on Russia for Another Six Months: Hungary Surprisingly Silent, But Drama Isn’t Over!

Who would have thought Hungary would keep quiet this time? The leaders of the European Union member states have agreed to extend sectoral sanctions against Russia for another six months, until January next year. The deal was reached a whole month before the deadline — a rare feat in these tense negotiations.

What are these sanctions?

EU sanctions on Russia come in two main groups: sectoral sanctions that ban the export of various products to Russia, and lists of individuals and companies banned from entering the EU and whose assets are frozen. These sanctions are renewed every six months — sectoral ones in January and July, and the lists of individuals and companies in March and September.

Hungary and Slovakia — the main roadblocks

Although Hungary stayed surprisingly silent this time, there is still no agreement on the 18th package of sanctions. Hungary and Slovakia oppose some new measures because they want to keep buying Russian gas and oil. The EU aims to end its dependence on Russian fossil fuels by the end of the year, but these two countries are causing headaches.

Why does this matter?

The extension shows the EU’s firm stance against Russia over the Ukraine conflict. But the fact that Hungary and Slovakia demand exceptions reveals how hard it is to align all member states’ interests. This situation could slow down Europe’s transition to clean energy.

Conclusion

The EU managed to avoid a new drama with Hungary and extended the sanctions, but the real fight is yet to come. Will Hungary and Slovakia give in, or will the EU have to find new ways to convince them? Time will tell.
